Downtown Georgetown on a Saturday Night

Melissa and I decided to go out and grab a bite to eat. Before we left the house I checked over the newspaper to see if anything of interest was going on it town. Sure enough, there was free concert downtown at 8pm on the court house steps being sponsored by The Scott County Council of the Arts. That narrowed our choices to some place near downtown. Since it was already after 8 and we wanted to maximize our time at the concert, we decided to grab a quick bite at Subway. As we were walking down the street I took this photo of the courthouse that was being backlit by this awesome orangish hue due to the setting sun.

While at Subway I noticed they received 100% on their latest health inspection. Somehow just knowing that made the food taste better. After we ate we walked across the street to the Concert We heard the tail end of a pretty good version of “The Dance” being sung and the singer sounded very much like Garth Brooks. We recognized the singer as Brandon Cannada. That was his last song. We were sorry that we took our time eating and didn’t get a chance to hear more of him. Brandon graduated from Scott County in 2004 and he was the senior class president. I coached Brandon in little league baseball a decade ago and I like to think it was that experience that turned him into the leader and singer that he is today. Ok, I admit I am a little delusional.

The lighting wasn’t the best for taking photos of the event as the stage was not lit, but they turned out nice anyway.

The group who performed was called The Studio Players. They were very entertaining playing all types of songs. Local Georgetonians also joined them like Brandon who I mentioned earlier and his mother Irene (red shirt) in the picture above. Probably my favorite part was when the guy on the right “Cash”, sang songs imitating other people like Elvis, Willie Nelson, John Anderson, Ray Charles, and even Katherine Hepburn. He was spot on.

 

The evening was perfect for an outside concert – clear skies, low humidity and a little on the cool side. During the concert, Melissa leaned over and remarked about how cool it would be if Donny Osmond was performing on the court house. That gave me a Chuckle.

 

Towards the end of the concert, I pulled out my SD400 and took a short movie. This is a highly compressed movie so the quality isn’t the best. After the concert, Eve Oakley talked with us a few minutes. Eve is the Georgetown dynamo who arranges these concerts and enhances the quality of life here in Georgetown. I believe her official title is President of the Scott County Council or the Arts. She told us that Jim Miller was going to provide an evening of storytelling on Sunday night at Royal Springs Park at 7:30. Melissa and I plan to attend. She also told us that she was attempting to get a return engagement of a rock band who impersonates The Beatles. They were here in Georgetown in early July and was a big hit. Unfortunately, Melissa and I were out of town that weekend and missed it. We are looking forward to that event.

We really enjoyed the concert. Besides the occasional whiff of second hand smoke, the outdoor concert is a great place for a family to spend a nice evening.

 

After the concert, Melissa and I stopped by Lock and Key for a couple of “Carmel Hots” for our dessert. The place was busy with people doing various things. I saw a couple playing cards. A guy was surfing the net using his laptop while chatting with a female acquaintance. Another dude was at the bar eating a sandwich and reading something. There were people in the back as well. I didn’t go back there to see what they were doing. They had live music. A gentleman was playing the guitar player. According to the Lock and Key website, the artist was Grover Mollineaux. He was very enjoyable and added to the ambience. I took short movie to give you the idea. Again I compressed it to 700K so bear with the limited quality.

 

 

After dessert, we scoped out the downtown area a little thinking about taking some night shots in the future. I figure I would need to do so around 3am to avoid photographic clutter like cars and what not. Melissa agreed to accompany me when I do. We drove around the Georgetown College campus checking out nice locations for night photography. I am looking forward to doing some night time photography around Georgetown. This is another item on my photographic to-do list.

 

Finally on our way home we drove past Live Wire and they had a band as well. Downtown Georgetown is a happenin’ place on Saturday evenings.
